200 Safeway stores have just added affordable vegan chicken nuggets that taste just like the real thing
Food company Rebellyous Foods just announced an expansion of its vegan chicken products that includes 200 Safeway stores in the Pacific Northwest. The Seattle-based plant-based startup launched its one-pound packs of Rebellyous Plant-Based Nuggets in retail stores last year. The price has remained constant, although product options and retail locations have expanded significantly.
A focus on affordability
Before launching its first vegan nugget, Rebellyous raised over $ 1 million thanks to key investors like Saudi Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed. In April 2020, the company secured an additional $ 6 million to develop and manufacture two new products – Rebellyous Chicken Tender and Patties. Founded by former Boeing engineer and Good Food Institute graduate Christie Lagally, the company is determined to develop not only tasty meat alternatives, but meat alternatives that are affordable and accessible. All products are priced at $ 5.99 per package – with the exception of Alaska, where the price goes up to $ 6.49. Lagally’s goal is to expand Rebellyous’ products to supermarkets nationwide.
Chicken has a moment
Potentially spurred on by the hot chicken and chicken sandwich trend, plant-based chicken products hit shelves like never before. Companies like NUGGS, Sweet Earth, Incogmeato and even Target’s Good & Gather brand have launched new vegan chicken products in the form of nuggets, tenders and strips. Chicken-specific vegan restaurants have also made their progress and have popped up in California (Wolfies), Texas (Project Pollo), and Oklahoma (The Beet Box), to name a few. While vegan burgers aren’t going anywhere, vegan chicken quickly appeals to consumers’ appetites both in the store and while eating.
