China’s largest fast food chain Dicos is replacing eggs with vegan ONLY eggs
This week, one of China’s leading fast food chains, Dicos, put vegan JUST Egg on the menu at 500 locations. JUST Egg is now part of three breakfast burgers, three bagel sandwiches and a “western” breakfast plate. Dicos replaces its animal chicken eggs with the vegan egg based on mung beans. This is the first time a large fast food restaurant has swapped an animal-based product for a plant-based product across multiple regular menu offerings. “The introduction of JUST Egg at Dicos is a product and brand upgrade based on increasing consumer interest in nutrition, healthier eating and environmental awareness,” said Xie Yahui, Dicos chief marketing officer. “By adding JUST Egg to our core breakfast menu offerings, customers can experience JUST Egg in a number of ways. We look forward to the reaction of consumers and will plan future menu offerings. “
Based in California Just eat (the company behind JUST Egg) and Dicos will use a variety of social media platforms, including WeChat and Weibo, to promote the new menu items. “We witnessed the consumer excitement in China for JUST Egg, all of which were driven by a generational shift towards healthier, more sustainable foods,” said Josh Tetrick, Co-Founder and CEO of Eat Just. “We are grateful to be working with Dicos on this global milestone for vegetable protein to work together. “
Vegan at Dicos
ONLY Egg is not the first vegan product available from Dicos. Last year, the chain partnered with Chinese meat brand Starfield to put vegan chicken products like burgers and nuggets on their menu at nearly 2,600 locations across the country. This makes Dicos the first major Chinese fast food chain to offer plant-based products in the country.
