Danone is building a vegetable empire with Follow Your Heart Acquisition
Today, the food company Danone announced its intention to acquire 100 percent of the shares in Earth Island, the company behind the manufacturer Vegenaise follow your heart. The acquisition allows Danone to build on its goal of growing its global plant-based sales to $ 6 billion by 2025 and giving Earth Island the opportunity to grow its footprint significantly. Although the financial terms of this acquisition were not disclosed, in 2016 Danone acquired WhiteWave Foods – the parent company of the vegan brands Silk, So Delicious, Vega, and Alpro – for $ 12.5 billion.
“In order to preserve and sustain our mission to make the best plant-based food products available to as many people as possible, Earth Island was looking for a partner who was able and well-positioned to help us accelerate and expand these efforts “Said Bob Goldberg, Co-Founder and CEO of Earth Island.” I am pleased to announce that we have found such a company that we share both a vision and values with, and which we believe will Perhaps more than any other organization in the world, it will help us advance and expand our mission quickly. ”
Follow the vegan mission of your heart
Earth Island was founded in California in 1988 to meet the growing demand for Vegenaise at the Follow Your Heart Market & Café. Today, a variety of plant-based foods are produced under the Follow Your Heart brand, including cheese, sour cream, VeganEgg and salad dressing. The acquisition will accelerate the national and international growth of Follow Your Heart’s products alongside Danone’s Silk, So Delicious and Vega brands.
“Our mission has always been to make the best plant-based food products and make them available to as many people as possible,” said Goldberg. “We’re excited to work with the Danone family of plant-based companies to bring about positive change in the world by creating sustainably and responsibly produced food.”
Vegan at Danone
In addition to acquiring existing herbal brands, Danone has launched vegan versions of its existing dairy products. In 2018, the Paris-based company added Good Plants vegan yogurt line based on almond milk under its popular Light & Fit brand in four low-sugar flavors: lemon meringue, chocolate coconut, strawberry and vanilla. In 2019 Danone also added a coconut milk-based version of its popular oikos yogurt.
“We are very excited to welcome the Follow Your Heart team to our great team at Danone,” said Shane Grant, Executive Vice President and CEO of Danone North America. “The Follow Your Heart family shares our commitment to making high quality products that delight consumers while also contributing to the wellbeing of people and the planet. Consumers are becoming increasingly flexible about their diets and we look forward to working with the Follow Your Heart team to bring even more choices to our consumers. This partnership will build on our success in plant-based beverages, yogurt alternatives and creams and further accelerate the growth of our North American plant-based business. “
