Indian entrepreneur creates vegan cashmere from plants

India-based style entrepreneur Gowri Shankar has made vegan wool from calotropis, a wild-flowering shrub generally often called milkweed that grows abundantly throughout India. Shankar began his firm Faborg with the purpose of creating sustainable vegan wool materials from crops.

“I simply casually stared out the window one afternoon in April and seen one thing. There have been roughly 10 to 15 sunbirds surrounding this bush, they usually constructed a nest out of this specific fiber. I actually thought of whether or not this… pure fiber might be transformed right into a textile, ”Shankar advised the media firm Better India.

The vegan cashmere material known as Weganool feels luxurious as a result of softness and pure sheen of the plant fibers. The stem and pod fibers of the plant are hand-processed by girls from the local people after which combined with 70 % licensed natural cotton that’s spun into delicate Weganool yarn. Residues from fiber extraction are concentrated and transformed into pure fertilizers and pesticides known as ARKA for native natural farmers.

Weganool made its debut on the Future Cloth Expo in London, England earlier this 12 months, with a particular give attention to the Expo Innovation desk.
