Karl Lagerfeld has just launched a vegan cactus leather bag

This week the luxury fashion house Karl Lagerfeld presented its first collection made of vegan cactus leather. The label teamed up with supermodel and sustainability attorney Amber Valletta – a friend of the late Karl Lagerfeld – to create the Lagerfeld x Amber Valletta collection Here you will find Desserto, a vegan leather made from nopal (prickly pear) by the Mexican entrepreneurs Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez. During his lifetime, Lagerfeld was a fan of the use of fur in his fashion collections. However, Valletta’s take on the Lagerfeld designs – the brand’s first collaboration – includes a sustainable cactus leather version of the iconic K / Kushion bag, available in a dark green or black shade (dyed with organic pigments) with a pleated or seamless design. The collection also includes a GRS (Global Recycle Standard) cotton version of the K / Kusion bag and the toiletry bag, as well as a wallet and card holder made from the award-winning Desserto. “This collaboration shows that we don’t have to sacrifice style to create responsibly made fashion,” said Valletta.

The Lagerfeld x Amber Valletta collection, priced between $ 58 and $ 470, is available exclusively at Karl Lagerfeld Website and on e-commerce platform Zalando. A portion of the sales from the collection will be donated to Ocean Cleanup, an organization that works to rid the oceans of plastic. A second Lagerfeld x Amber Valletta collection with ready-to-wear clothing will appear in spring 2022.

Designer trench leather

Lagerfield joins a growing number of fashion labels that have chosen to include new vegan leathers made from other sustainable materials in their collections. In 2020, biotech company Bolt Threads partnered with big fashion brands like Stella McCartney, Adidas, Lululemon and Kering to give them access to its vegan Mylo leather (made from mycelium, the fast-growing root system of fungi). Last month, McCartney became the first designer to present Mylo in two concept pieces: a bustier and a pair of pants. Another mycelium company, MycoWorks, is partnering with luxury brand Hermès to bring out a new version of its Victoria handbag made from mycelium-based Sylvania.

Outside of the luxury designer space, other fashion companies are now using plant-based leather, which is made from myriad materials including waste from the wine industry, pineapples, recycled ocean plastic, and other plastic-based alternatives to animal leather and vegan leather.
