Los Angeles gets its first vegan meatball shop
On February 26th, Brothers Meatballs will open as the first fully vegan meatball store in Los Angeles, CA. Founded by food industry veterans Mauro and Sergio Corbia together with chef Mark Mittleman – their self-proclaimed “brother of another mother” –Brothers meatballs will serve a menu inspired by their Italian mother’s Sunday lunch, centered around the brothers’ homemade vegan meatballs, made using a secret recipe from local ingredients.
The vegan meatballs can be ordered as part of sandwiches (on homemade ciabatta bread, available with gluten-free options) like the verde, which are served with green rocket pesto tomato sauce, calabrian peppers, basil and fresh vegan mozzarella or plates like the Solamente Balls, soaked in tomato sauce, baked with basil and a combination of non-dairy mozzarella and parmesan and served with garlic bread. The store also serves vegan versions of other Italian classics like eggplant parmesan, melanzana lasagna, panzanella salad, as well as side dishes like giardiniera (a mixture of pickled vegetables) and dessert options like panna cotta in chocolate and limoncello raspberry flavors.
“We wanted to create a restaurant that would appeal to both herbivores and omnivores, and we believe that a plant-based diet shouldn’t mean that you will be deprived of great-tasting options,” Mauro Corbia told VegNews. “We grew up eating healthy, delicious meals that our mother made with pure love. We want to bring the same authenticity and flavor to the plant-based gourmets in LA. ”
Vegan with an Italian flair
Mauro Corbia previously ran Mauro’s Cafe at the celebrity hangout Fred Segal and currently owns Fabiolus Cucina – a Hollywood-based restaurant where his brother Sergio Corbia is the head chef and co-owner. Brothers Meatballs ’30-seater room was inspired by 1960s Italian design and features mid-century decor with walls adorned with photos from the brothers’ own photo albums. The shop also offers merchandise such as custom t-shirts, hats, bags and stickers that are created in collaboration with the Truffl creative agency. As an additional sustainability bonus, all food at Brothers Meatballs is packaged in compostable containers supplied by the sustainable VegWare brand.
