Peet just launched a vegan breakfast sandwich with ONLY eggs and meat
Starting today, coffee chain Peet’s Coffee will be launching the fully vegan Everything Plant-Based Sandwich as part of their spring menu at participating locations across the country. The new sandwich consists of a Past Meat Breakfast Sausage patty, folded mung bean-based JUST egg, melted non-dairy cheddar cheese and is served on top of a bagel-thin layer. “We are very pleased to be able to offer a delicious breakfast sandwich with all plant-based ingredients together with Beyond Meat and JUST Egg Peetniks,” said Lori Fulmer, Senior Food Research and Development Manager at Peet. “As consumers demand more plant-based options, we’ve moved beyond dairy alternatives and targeted a plant-based breakfast sandwich that is not only better for the planet, but every bite as delicious as a typical animal breakfast sandwich.”
Peet’s also offers a variety of plant-based milk options, including oat milk, which is on the spring menu as part of two beverages: the Horchata Cold Brew Oat Latte and the Golden Spice Cold Brew Oat Latte (which is not vegan contains honey).
Peet’s vs Starbucks
Peet introduced the Everything Plant-Based Sandwich as a fully vegan option to stand out from other chains like Starbucks, which are making sandwiches made from plant-based meat with milk cheese and chicken eggs. “Peet’s Coffee isn’t just happy to tick the plant-based check box,” said Josh Tetrick, Co-Founder and CEO of Eat Just. “They understand the importance of providing high quality, delicious food to their consumers, and we couldn’t be more thrilled that JUST Egg met their expectations. “
Starbucks launched the Impossible Breakfast Sandwich at all locations in June. This sandwich contains a plant-based Impossible Sausage patty, milk cheese and chicken eggs and cannot be ordered vegan as the sandwiches are not made to order at Starbucks.
However, Starbucks could soon follow in Peet’s footsteps with a new menu item: the Plant-Powered Breakfast Sandwich. Last fall, Starbucks tested this fully vegan sandwich – made with an Impossible Sausage Patty, vegan cheese, mung bean-based eggs, and served on an English muffin – at a store in Issaquah, WA. In January 2021, Starbucks expanded the test region of the Plant-Powered Breakfast Sandwich to Dallas. This month Starbucks added oat milk and the vegan Chickpea Bites & Avocado Protein Box to its nationwide menu.
